Designing Time Perception

This master thesis examines the causes and effects of time subjectivity. The aim is to give the subjective perception of time to the designer as a variable, and thus shapeable, quantity. Have a look at the thesis [GER]

Design possibilities of subjective perception of time

This masterthesis shows the subjectivity of our perception of time. The causes and effects of time subjectivity are explained and considered from the point of view of design. This thesis does not provide an exemplarily elaborated design product. Rather, its aim is to include the fact of the perception of time in the design process and to give it to the designer as a changeable and thus shapeable quantity.

2 min to dive in

A short video to give you an overview of the exciting field of time perception.

The Newspaper

*As a core element of our thesis, the newspaper contains texts on the subjectivity of time and how we can influence it as designers, divided into the theoretical examination of eight fields of science and their view of time subjectivity, as well as practical applications and self-experiments.

You want to take your time and read a newspaper about 'Time & Design'? Write us! You can find the original newspaper in the HfG archive. The digital version here

The Website

In addition to the newspaper, the website contains theoretical texts as well as practical application examples and self-experiments on the design possibilities of subjective perception of time. Furthermore, our thesis becomes accessible to everyone and can be better multiplied. Here you can find our thesis online.

Der Podcast

As the third core element of our thesis, we have recorded the podcast »Gesprächszeit«. We talk to experts from different scientific fields about their insights and experience with time subjectivity. Go directly to the podcast here.

The Workshop

In a one-week workshop together with students of the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd we were able to review our findings and theories, as well as generate practical applications for our quite theoretical topic.
